Mr. Washington Bennette “fondly known as “Chief” was born on Wednesday, March
14, 1923 to the late Maryann Brown of Summerton, SC and Manning Bennette of Sumter,
South Carolina. He was married to the late Mary Ann Nelson Bennette and Dorothy
He entered into the eternal rest on Monday, April 2, 2018 at Jamaica Hospital in
Queens, New York.
Washington enlisted into the United States Navy on October 1943, where he served
until December 1945. He dedicated 20 years of service as a Train Conductor and Bus
Operator with the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority “MTA” and United States Postal
Services. He was an active member of Greater Bibleway Temple in Brooklyn, New York. He
was also a Past Master of his Masonic Lodge.
He enjoyed his daily talk with the local merchants and is lovingly by the neighborhood
children as he watched growing up; and becoming parents themselves. He was known to
all in his Queens, NY community as "Poppie". He enjoyed spending time with his family,
dining out and watching his favorite show “The View”.
He was a dedicated loving and supportive husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle
and friend. Washington will be remembered for his charm, compassion, loyalty and
kindness. He was truly the patriarch of the family.
Washington was preceded in death by his daughters, Barbara Ann Bennette-
Stowers, Barbara (Puggie) Bennette and Williene Bennette.
He leaves to cherich his memories:his loving wife, Dorothy Bennette of 41 years of
Queens, NY; his children, James Bennette and Francess Bennette, both of New Jersey,
Candance Gaymon, Howard Bennette and Ikisha Bennette-Maitlall of New York,
Washington Bennette, Jr., and Antares Bennette of North Carolina; three sisters, Williene
Bennette-John and brother-in-law, Albany Harris John of Summerton, South Carolina ,
Minnie Wells of Philadelphia, PA and Ernestine Caldwell of Poughkeepsie, NY; a brother,
Roger Caldwell of California and a host of 20 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren,
nieces, nephews and friends.
The family is receiving friends at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Williene and
Albany Harris John, 31 Caldwell Street, Summerton, SC.
