Vincent Kirkton Hilliard was born June 4, 1985 in Albert Einstein Hospital, Bronx, NY to
Clarita Diane Jones-Hilliard and the late Anthony Vincent Hilliard.
Affectionately, known as “Vinny”, he attended New York City Public schools, where he
graduated from Westchester School for Special Children in 2006.
From the time Vinny was a baby, he faced what some may view as medical hardships
but he never let anything deter him from being a happy, fun-loving person. Even if he was
feeling pain, he would not let you see him down. He would just hug you or share a happy
infectious laugh. When he would hug a female, he would affectionately run his hands through
her hair and then give it a little tug. His parents pride and love for him didn’t allow Vincent’s
diagnosis of Down’s Syndrome dictate or determine who he was and how he enjoyed his life.
He departs as a well-traveled individual, introduced to the world for all its marvelous wonders
that he dared to explore.
Vincent was loved by all that encountered him. His infectious smile beamed from a
personality that would bring a smile and joy to anyone’s day. His absolute favorite singers were
Mary J. Blige and Al Green. From a very small boy, he enjoyed soulful classic Rhythm and
Blues Music. When he would come home from his program on Friday’s he would play his
music extremely loud as if to say, “Thank you, I don’t have to go to the program for two
Every day when he came home from his day program he would make sure that when his
mother came home, Vinny would always have the lights on for her. While he might not have
had the most expressive vocabulary he loved his Mom so very much and this was his way of
expressing it to her. He would always write his mother and cousins what we called, love notes,
stating “I Love You”.
Everyone knows that his absolute favorite meal was “chicken and rice” from his
(Mama/cousin) “Sarah” and he also loved his godmother/cousin “Delores” to make him
spaghetti. He knew that if he was at Mama’s or Delores’ house that he was going to eat well
and have his delicious meal any way he wanted, especially from these two very special people
in his life. Their love and special care for him was nothing short of being Vincent’s “two”
special second Mothers, that God blessed him with.
Vinny’s existence was such a blessing to his cousins. Their love and pride in him taught
them all from the smallest to the oldest how to have empathy, compassion, understanding,
patience and pride. His cousins all share one sentiment and mutual code of love and respect.
That “If you can’t respect or love Vinny then you CAN NOT be a friend of mine. We are a
proud package deal!!!!!!”
He was preceded in death by his father, Anthony V. Hilliard.
On August 22, 2017, Vinny transitioned this life to be with his Heavenly Father. His last
words to his Mother were “No Pain, No More”- Lyrics from Mary J. Blige.
He leaves to mourn his passing: his beloved mother, Clarita Diane Jones Hilliard of the
Bronx, NY, an uncle, Jerry Hilliard of NY, his two second mothers, “Mama” Aunt Sarah Lovett
of NY/ and his Godmother/cousin, Delores Cook of Manning, SC, Cousin/Aunt Yvonne Scott
of NY, and cousin/aunt, Rosalee Tolbert of NY, as well as a host of cousins, who are more
than cousins and extended siblings.
He also leaves behind a special person whom cared for him as if he was her own, who
waited for Vincent every day after his program, who cared for him with patients, love, and
affection-his nurturer, protector and caregiver, Lori Ray.
The family is receiving friends at the home of his God-Mother, Mrs. Deloris Cook, 402
Bagnal Drive, Manning,SC.
