Mrs. Mary Lee Rhames Green Pearson, was the 3rd of 9 children born to the union of
George Sr. and Malvenia Rhames, on Thursday, September 9, 1948, in Summerton, SC. She
departed this life on Friday, October 13, 2017, at New York Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.
Mary grew up in Summerton and attended the public schools of Clarendon County, where she
graduated from Scott's Branch High School, Class of 1966. After leaving the south, she
continued her education and attended Brooklyn College in New York.
Mary moved to New York in 1967, there she married Thomas Green. From this union, two
beautiful children Myra and Thomas “Rod,” were born.
For 42 years, Mary worked as an Executive Administrator at the UJA-Federation. She retired in
Mary’s amazing life is filled with many accomplishments and the fulfillment of many
milestones. One of the many occasions that brought her joy was her marriage to Ralph T.
Pearson in 1990.
Mary, a loving, caring humanitarian with deep maternal wisdom had a beautiful spirit.
Outwardly she was exceptionally well put together, neat, stylish; with every hair in place, and
always on time. She was the unquestionably a “Southern Belle”.
Known for “Telling It Like It Is”; she always said what she meant and meant what she said but
her words were conveyed with love. She was also known for her peas and rice and sweet
bread that she loved to prepare for various events. She had a great sense of humor and was fun
loving. Mary loved to dance to oldies and sing country and western songs.
Mary and her family have been members of the First Corinthian Baptist Church for over fifty
years. She had a heart for service to the incarcerated, the homeless and the sick and
homebound. She served on the Board of Desperation Housing and was the Chairperson for
Women’s Day. Her faithful service to God and God’s people led to her ordination as one the
first female members of the Deaconate Ministry in 1993 under the leadership of the Reverend
Dr. Thomas McKenzie Jr.
Mary is known to have helped everyone she came in contact with spiritually, emotionally and
through her great generosity. She is a compassionate, loving, caring, intelligent, humble, loving
and respectable woman of God. She is known throughout FCBC as a “Prayer Warrior,” always
ready to give of herself and intercede on behalf of others. She is and will always be a strong
voice of God.
Mary was well traveled with her most momentous trip being her pilgrimage to the Holy Land,
Jordan and Egypt with her beloved daughter and frequent travel companion, Myra and sister,
She is preceded in death by her husband Ralph T. Pearson; her parents; one brother George Jr.
(Lucretia); and two sisters Lillian “Monk” (Friendly) Wilder; and Roberta “Bunky” Rhames.
She leaves to mourn her passing two loving and devoted children, Myra Green (Anthony)Toulon
of New York and Thomas “Rod” (Yahira) Green of New York; an adopted son, Joseph
Linburg Oliver; 8 Grandchildren; Micah T. Green, Ashanti A.M. Richardson Green, Tristan A.
Toulon, Amari G. Richardson Green, Bailey A. Toulon, Che’Myah Green, Davon Brown and
Melanie Rodriguez; four sisters; Ida (Harry) Felder of Harlem, New York, Katherine (Isaac)
Robinson, Barbara Rhames and Carrie Rhames, all of Summerton,South Carolina; one brother,
Frank Rhames of Summerton, South Carolina; a host of other close relatives and friends. (YOU
KNOW WHO YOU ARE!!!)
The family is receiving friends at the home of her sister, Barbara Rhames, 13 First Street,
