A Time to Be Born-
Mother Mary Johnson Dennis was born on Monday, August 20, 1923 to the late
Theodore and Easter Garris Johnson.
She was a professional cook at Skipper’s Truck Stop and continued her love for
cooking as she served her children, grandchildren, great grand children and church and
community members until her health failed. If you ever talked to any of these people,
especially her grands, they would tell you she was the best cook in the world.
Mary had a passion for flowers and hoeing the grass in her yard. Some of her other
hobbies include: quilting, where in her lifetime she made over 100 quilts and spreads. Most
of the family members enjoyed her canning skills, where she would can thousands of jars of
fruits and vegetables.
Homemade cakes and pies could always be found in her kitchen. Her fried chicken
was a one of a kind recipe that she shared with no one. One thing that we all enjoyed was
Mama’s famous tomato pickle and she passed it on to some of the daughters. Whenever
something happened in the neighborhood, she was ready to lend a hand by preparing a
meal or helping out financially.
She raised her children in a very strict and disciplined manner, where even the grands
and the great-grands got to experience some of her discipline. She had a love for people
and had a very quiet spirit but she always said what she meant and meant what she said.
A Time to Grow
She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. She was a member of
Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, Davis Crossroads Community for many years and
later joined the Open House of Prayer in Summerton, SC. She served in many capacities:
Gospel Choir, Kitchen Committee, Cemetery Committee, Mother of the Church, Prayer
Band and served in all other capacities. She was a dedicated member of her church and
made certain that she took care of her pastor. She also made certain that things always
went as smooth as they could in order to keep the peace.
A Time to Love
She was united in Holy matrimony to the late Eddie T. Dennis.
A Time to Die
On Sunday, May 31, 2020 Mary departed this earthly life at her residence. She was
preceded in death by three sons, Adam. Samuel and Jerry.
A Time to Mourn- She leaves to mourn her passing and grow from her memories: nine
daughters, Mary (Dawson) Andrews, Louise Oliver, Easter Hampton, Deloris Middleton,
Ernestine (Charles) Oliver, Margie (Johnny) Green, Rosa L. Fritzpatrick, Cloria (James)
Durant, Gloria Gibson and Oscalee Millard; two sisters, Gertrude Johnson and Thelma
Sanchez; one brother, M C (Mary) Johnson; two sisters-in-law and seven brothers-in-law
and 58 grandchildren, 47 great-grands and 38 great-great grandchildren.
She had a grand that she claimed as her own, Christain Oliver. She also had a special
nephew that she called her boy, Deacon Ben Johnson. And a special granddaughter,
Treash Andrews, who was her caregiver.
Due to Covid-19, there will be no visitation.
