Ms. Barbara Jean Wilder, a daughter of the late Pinckney Wilder and Louise
Adger Wilder and mother of Charvonnia Renee Wilder-Massaline was born on
Saturday, November 9, 1946 in Summerton, SC. Barbara departed this life on
Sunday, December 3, 2017, at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital, Bronx, NY.
Barbara grew up in Summerton, SC. She graduated from Scott’s Branch High
School in 1964. After high school, she attended Voorhees College in Denmark, SC.
She also attended and received an Associate’s Degree from New York City College,
At an early age, Barbara joined St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, where she
maintained her membership even after moving to New York. While in New York, she
regularly attended church and attended St. Mark on home visits. She enjoyed
traveling and spending time with her family and friends.
After moving to New York City in 1965, she worked on various jobs before
becoming employed with the New York City Police Department. In 2002, Barbara
retired with over 20 years of employment with the department. Her achievements with
the Police Department include the following awards: Police Service Award, Public
Servant Award, Principals of Management and Supervision Award, and 20 Years of
Service and Achievement.
As a Pancreatic Cancer Survivor, Barbara became a Cancer Society Volunteer
beginning in 2005. Her service awards with the Cancer Society include: Certificate of
Appreciation, North Bronx Cancer Society Volunteer of the Year, and American Cancer
Society Volunteer of the Year.
Barbara worked closely with the Salvation Army, volunteered with the AIDS
Foundation, the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, and she
volunteered with Voter Registration as a Poll Worker.
On Monday, December 11, 2017, the New York City Police Department held a
Service in special tribute to Barbara’s legacy.
She is preceded in death by her parents and seven siblings: Matthew, Mark,
Richard, Milton, Thomas, Doll (Eliza) and Mary.
Precious memories will be cherished by her daughter, Charvonnia Renee
Wilder-Massaline and her granddaughter “Kiwi”, Erykah Brianna Massaline, both of
Brandon, FL; four brothers, Felix Boston of Pinewood, SC, Pinkney (Shellyanne)
Wilder, III of Durham, NC, Harold (Nanako) Wilder of Sumter, SC, Kenneth Wilder of
Pinewood, SC; eight sisters, Thelma Wilder of Bronx, NY, Cora Shannon and Dorothy
Wilder of Pinewood, SC, Bessie Spence of New York, NY, Brenda Wilder-Watkins of
Brandon, FL, Marguerite “Lois” Wilder and Linda Shannon of Sumter, SC, and Betty
Richardson of Dallas, TX; a sister-in-law, Mae Frances Wilder-Gamble, and a host of
other close relatives and friends.
The family is receiving friends at the family home, 1143 Coard (Panola Community)
